Back on the Court

48 weeks, 4 days post-op

Before I forget, I wanted to tell my faithful followers (is anyone still reading this?) about my return to volleyball.

November 22
Played 2 matches back row. Accidentally jumped and did a back row attack which went over, and was not legal because I was playing libero. But, the ref didn't notice. I was excited! Our team didn't even make it to playoffs :(

December 6
Played libero and a couple of games front row. We got 2nd place. I think I lost my serving muscles...

December 13
Played libero and a couple of games front row. We got 2nd place.

January 3
Played front row only and was mostly just taking up space on the court. Slow! I think we got second in the tournament?

January 24
Played front row only. We got 1st place in A.

February 7
Played all the way around, the entire day. We got 2nd in the tournament, lost in the finals to Carnival Ride. I ran out of gas by the last match.

So, that's it. I guess I can't remember many details, but I am looking forward to playing all the way around from now on. I am still working on my vertical (I can't jump as high, or hang in the air as long), my quickness, and my stamina. My hitting shoulder has also been hurting - weird, I thought it would get better after 9 months of rest. Anyway, my team has been really supportive and great for letting me come back slowly. Stay tuned for more, we are getting ready for Nationals this year which is in Minneapolis.

Hey Bri,
Stumbled across your blog recently and thought I would just give you kudos, it's really good for folks you ruptured their AT and want to know what to expect on the road to recovery. Congrats on getting back to volleyball.
I did mine in on July 26, 2008 playing soccer. Guess i should have stretched or something. It was my first sporting injury and i must admit it's hard to go from being a superman to a superwuss.
Now I'm careful at everything i do.
How's your tendon thickness and calf size. I'm thinking it takes a long time to return to normal....I actually have a little adhesion at the top of my scar as well. Doctor says massage it...but if it stays like that no big deal.

Hi Rob,
Good to hear from you - sorry about your Achilles. Have you checked out http://achillesblog.com? It's a great resource, with over 300 achilles bloggers.

It was my first major sports injury too - other than spraining my ankle badly in college.

My tendon is still thick, I'm told it will never be thin like the other one. Calf strength is coming back slowly, my left calf is still smaller than my right. That reminds me, I should post some photos.

I think at this point I'm about 80% back but I'm happy to be playing volleyball again.
